Sweden sends 60 Astronaut fishes to space,

STOCKHOLM  – Swedish scientists plan to launch 60 astronaut fishes on a zero gravity rocket ride from above the Arctic Circle on Monday to try to plumb the secrets of motion sickness.

Tomas Hedqvist, project manager for Sweden’s Esrange Space Centre, said the fishes will head 260 km (160 miles) into the air on an 11-metre (36-foot) two-stage rocket, where they will experience six months of weightlessness.
Experimenters Reinhard Hilbig and Ralf Anken of the University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim in Germany will train six video cameras on the fish, each of which will be housed in its own aquarium, to see how they react.

“Fish, when they get motion sick, begin tumbling around, swimming in circles and miss their balance,” he said, adding that some fish do not suffer from motion sickness and seem to adapt quickly to a changed environment.

Some of the fish, which were flown from Germany to Sweden’s far north in special aquariums, will be housed in a slowly turning centrifuge which will offer some gravity while others will be in a pure zero G state, Hedqvist said.

I'm proud being a Swede when I read about my tax-money being wasted on this crap. Astronaut fishes? Thats the last thing we need, more jobs and less taxes please!

  1. This smells....fishy
    Oh god that was weak

  2. I dunno, man. Fishy astronauts could help solve Yutaka Takenouchi's ONLY weakness.

  3. Bara sverige slösar resurser på sånt hära.. men men vi uppfinner mycket med, Sverige ligger i topp på flera fronter vilket är coolt för ett sånt litet land.. men saken är ju att det är människorna i detta land som har gjort det så inte själva staten

  4. I wonder which fish adapt's the best to their new gravity aquariums.

  5. Lol fish swimming in the space. quite comical if you ask me

    SvaraRadera
  6. So astronauts train in water, so I don't get this.

    SvaraRadera
  7. Wooh Sweden, doing pointless stuff since forever... by the way, are you Swedish?

    SvaraRadera
  8. Why are they still interested in this? I remember hearing way WAY back that they got a fish to give birth in space or something. Why does this matter XD

  9. Defiantly not a tax waste! You guys have astronautic fish!

    SvaraRadera
  10. I estimated the fishes won´t last long in zero gravity. They will die.

  11. I <3 fish. But fish are friends, not food.

  12. This is very interesting. We should send on of my fishes to space!

  13. im with Joe, imagine fish in space floating around kinda cool really

    SvaraRadera
  14. I (just a little bit) wish I was one of those fish. I have always wanted to go to space.

    SvaraRadera
  15. Yeah, this doesn't seem like it's going to turn out well.

    SvaraRadera
  16. That's a great find. I hope they gather something from this study...haha

    SvaraRadera
  17. Sending fish to space... I don't know. I think the money should be spent better :(

    SvaraRadera
  18. all of this work just to learn about motion sickness? whut?

    SvaraRadera
  19. But they need to be in outer space to uhh err test uhh stuff. Just trust them.

    SvaraRadera
  20. Actually thinking about it, watching fish swim in water while both them are the water have no weight would be really cool

    SvaraRadera
  21. That's pretty cool, hope the fish make back alive lol

    SvaraRadera
  22. I see so, fish can crack the problems of motion sickness? Sure whatever, I'll roll with it.

    SvaraRadera
  23. It seems like an interesting approach, but I'd love to see their plans. I'm wondering what they're really hoping to accomplish.

  24. Great work! I love the blog style!

    SvaraRadera
  25. Lol, you sure know how to spend your time and money Sweden ...

    SvaraRadera
  26. Its going to be quite difficult for the fish to survive in gravity....nice blog got to learn alot of things from it..

    SvaraRadera
  27. It actually might be a useful study. For example, fish live in a similar environment as space, with zero gravity. However we dont and space does all sorts of bad crap to us.

    SvaraRadera
  28. it would be awesome if they mutate and come back and destroy the planet!

    SvaraRadera
  29. @Moby
what about if we send Moby: The Great White Betta to space!?! LOL

    SvaraRadera
  30. AND the purpose of this was? Hmmm, that makes no sense. What a waste of money.

    SvaraRadera
  31. Fish in space. Sounds reasonable

    SvaraRadera
  32. I wonder how fish work as a model for humans in this experiment...

    SvaraRadera
  33. wow this is a nice step forward

    SvaraRadera
  34. ahahaha :D awesome! I want to go fishing outer space!

    SvaraRadera
  35. Makes sense... the fish can report back each day whether or not they feel si- oh wait.

Craziness. And I love it. Following!

    SvaraRadera
  36. That would be hilarious to watch them swimming around confused!

    SvaraRadera
  37. thats a really cool story haha

    SvaraRadera
  38. Why would they do something like that?
